Amazon Echo is a range of smart speakers developed by Amazon that includes Standard Echo, Echo Plus, Echo dot, Echo Show, Echo Show 5 and Echo spot. It is the second addition to Amazon’s device portfolio after the launch of Kindle devices in 2007. These smart speakers can play music, prepare and update your to-do list, wake you up in the morning, provide weather reports, traffic updates, and some other real-time information. But since Amazon Echo is a hands-free smart speaker, how do you control it?

Understand your Amazon Echo device

Amazon Echo is a voice-controlled device that is connected to the cloud-based intelligent virtual assistant, Alexa. The Echo device needs to be connected to a WiFi network to work. The built-in microphone of the device continuously listens to the speeches, waiting for the wake-up word to be delivered. The wake-up word is set to “Alexa”, “Echo” or “Computer” for now. But do not worry about the breach of your privacy! There is a mute button on the device which will turn off the microphone, and it will stop listening to your speeches.

Once you say any of the wake-up words and give a command to the Echo device, it sends that command to the cloud-based Alexa voice service for interpretation. Alexa searches for the right response to your query from the vast number of web services. The response is sent back via Audio to the Echo device or sometimes as a text or graphics card on the Alexa app.
